Legal Career

 

            1982 - Qualified as a solicitor with City law firm Masons.

            1986/1992 - Partner at Lee & Thompson, a music, film, entertainment and media law practice.

            1993/2001 - Company Secretary at Tottenham Hotspur plc, acting as in-house lawyer for Sir Alan             Sugar and the football club.

            2001 - Established John Ireland & Co in Notting Hill London W11.

·          Commercial – advice concerning company and partnership formation, business development and disputes, terms and conditions of trade, e commerce, sponsorship, marketing and advertising, data protection, computer software and employment matters.

            Clients include media and IP rights holders & licensees, football clubs, record & production companies,                 film and tv producers & directors, design companies, pr companies etc.

·          Talent - extensive contract experience across all media including intellectual property rights such as copyright and trade marks, sampling, passing off, sponsorship and product endorsement, management, merchandising and licensing, privacy and breach of confidence cases, defamation and the sale of “kiss & tell” stories to the papers.

            Clients include sports persons, footballers, musicians, managers, agents, promoters, writers, chefs,             photographers, celebrities, model agencies etc.

·          Personal – divorce, child custody, the negotiation of executive employment contracts, litigation over dismissals, redundancy and discrimination, defending allegations of assault, motoring and drug offences, stalking and harassment.

             

Career Highlights

 

·          Drafting a £4M sponsorship agreement on just two A4 pages and getting it signed by both parties within 24 hours of the main terms being agreed.

·          Being appointed by the FA Premier League to be one of their representatives on the Football Association’s committee set up to make recommendations as to the future regulation of the top European football clubs.

·          Digging deep enough into a box of papers from the CPS to locate an obscure document that proved beyond doubt that Sol Campbell was innocent of the criminal charge of assaulting a football steward.

·          Acting for an employee who suffered abuse and bullying at the hands of their boss and within two weeks negotiating a payment into the client’s bank account of three years salary as compensation.
